Using
wireless services at UCSD and UCI
Short Operational Summary:
Set SSIDs as follows (without the quotes, using exact case):
- For
most UCSD locations - "UCSD" or "ANY"
- For
most UCI locations - "UCInet Mobile Access" or "ANY"
- For
the ICS part of UCI campus - "icsics"
For
additional details read the remaining text below.
One of the institutional goals of Cal-(IT)² is to coordinate
infrastructure services across the campuses. One service we are
addressing immediately is wireless access. As general wireless services
at each campus require the registration of hardware addresses, we
have established the following one-time procedure for gaining access
for future visits to the sister-campus:
UCI
Cal-(IT)² participants
Send your (MAC) wireless card[s] hardware address[es] to Garrett
Hildebrand, (mailto:gdh@uci.edu)
and Garrett will register your card for use on the UCSD wireless
network.
UCSD
Cal-(IT)² participants
Send your (MAC) wireless card[s] hardware address[es] to Tad Reynales
(mailto:treynales@ucsd.edu)
and Greg will register your card for use on the UCI wireless network.
Please
note:
Both campus wireless networks have an SSID (Network Name) which
can be configured into your wireless client. However, because the
SSID is "advertised" by the network, the default configuration
of the SSID on your wireless client software (which allows joining
any open network) should work as-is. Each card, however, may have
its own peculiarities. Lucent Orinoco cards, for example, work initially
with a blank SSID on open networks, but once the SSID has been set
to something, the client software does not allow the SSID to be
blank. In this case the network name may be set to ANY or to the
SSID of the target network. The SSID is case sensitive.
The
UCSD wireless space has the SSID of UCSD and will work with the
default or ANY setting as well. The UCI general wireless space has
the SSID of 'UCInet Mobile Access' (without the quotes) and will
work with the default or ANY setting also. UCI ICS campus wireless
space requires setting the SSID (Network Name) to icsics. This network
does not allow a default SSID or the ANY network name.
For
additional information on these wireless networks, please view the
following web pages:
We
view the above as short term measures while we work on more general
shared authentication models which span/trust the sister-campus.
Again, the goal is to allow for easy authentication and shared service
access between our campuses.
